During the opening of the Quantum Europe 2016 conference in Amsterdam, a ‘Quantum Manifesto’ was presented to the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Henk Kamp and European Commissioner of Digital Economy and Society Günther H. Oettinger. This manifesto is an initiative of Kamp and Oettinger. It contains the European strategy for development of quantum technology to create revolutionary new ict-applications and new industry.

The European Commission recently proposed to make €1 billion available for a Quantum Flagship, a largescale European research program for quantum technology. The Quantum Manifesto was endorsed by over 3,400 leaders from science, industry and governmental organizations.

Minister Kamp, hosting the conference in the context of the Dutch EU Presidency said: “Europe is determined to play a leading role in the development of Quantum technology. It can provide a radical increase of capacity and precision in the fields of communication, computing, sensing and simulation. Therefore, quantum technology has the potential to transform global industries and markets, which will lead to prosperity and sustainable growth for Europe.

Commissioner Oettinger: “Building on the strong support of the Quantum Manifesto, we aim to launch an ambitious large-scale flagship initiative to unlock the full potential of quantum technologies, accelerate its development and bring commercial products to the consumer marketplace. Europe wants to be leading in the global race of the development of quantum technology and we foster its take-up by industries. No single country can make it on its own, cooperation is essential to succeed. Now it is time to act together at European level to live up to this major European initiative”.
