QuTech

QuTech is the leading advanced research center for Quantum Computing and Quantum Internet. QuTech is a joint research center founded in 2014 by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Quantum technology is a key future emerging technology and QuTech is at the forefront of research and development in this field. QuTech addresses both scientific and engineering challenges in close collaboration with internationally leading industrial partners. Within QuTech researchers of TNO and the TU Delft faculties EWI and TNW work closely together in an international and inspiring working environment that allows plenty of space for ambition, entrepreneurship and innovation.

QuTech’s research and engineering activities are conducted in 3 divisions, each following a single and coherent research and development strategy. QuTech consists of the divisions Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Qubit Research. Each division consists of academic staff hired by TU Delft, of applied engineering staff hired by TNO, and of division-specific support staff. The division is headed by a Division Management Team (DMT), consisting of at least the Division Research Lead and the Division Engineering Lead.

Division Quantum Computing

Quantum Computing is among the most far-reaching and challenging of quantum technologies. A fault-free quantum computer can provide exponential advantages with respect to normal computers for the simulation of quantum systems and for certain other classes of problems such as prime factoring. The building of such fault-free quantum computer is a task which requires engineering, controlling and benchmarking of scalable quantum multi-qubit devices as well as the realization of quantum error correction and fault-tolerance. The division is working on multiple fronts, -in semiconducting spin qubit and superconducting hardware-, towards this long-term goal. Advances in material science, the development of control electronics and theory support & insight are crucial in enabling progress.

Job description

Delft University of Technology invites applications for a group leader position at QuTech in theory and applications of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Depending on the applicant’s profile, the group leader position at QuTech could be embedded as an assistant professor position at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS).

Requirements

The successful candidate is a theorist who is foremost interested and able to work closely with some of the experimentalists in quantum computing at QuTech. The candidate has knowledge and research interests in subjects such as quantum algorithms, analog/digital quantum simulation, variational quantum optimization methods, quantum machine learning, quantum error correction or quantum benchmarking. Depending on the applicant’s profile, the group leader position at QuTech can be embedded as an assistant professor position at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS). The embedding at EEMCS should be based on synergy between the research program of the candidate and the research and teaching activities in either electrical engineering, computer science or mathematics. In this case, the candidate is expected to participate in the teaching of courses in quantum technology and other subjects in EEMCS.

Conditions of employment

The successful applicant can expect a competitive start-up package to enable a quick start of their research program. Candidates will be appointed on a tenure-track basis with the prospect of a tenured position following a successful evaluation after 5 years. In exceptional cases, experienced candidates will be considered for a tenured position.

The actual salary will be based on your knowledge and relevant work-experience (€ 3.746 – € 5.826 gross per month based on a full-time basis). Full-time means 38 working hours per week.
