Quantum Technology Officer

At QuTech, inventions are made continuously. You help our scientists to identify, register and protect them. As our Quantum Technology Officer, you need to be the first to know about these technological discoveries, long before the outside world does. You cannot get any closer to scientific excellence than this!

QuTech was founded in 2014 as a collaboration between Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). It is positioned as separate research institute within the TU Delft organization. Our mission: to develop scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and an inherently safe quantum internet, based on the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics.

Quantum technology is among the most far-reaching and challenging technologies of our time. To address this challenge, we bring together scientists, engineers and industry in an inspiring environment. We are jointly creating the quantum future, because we believe that quantum technology has world-changing potential in many social and economic sectors, including health, agriculture, climate and safety.

Your team

You work within the QuTech Business Development (BD) Team, based at the heart of the TU Delft Campus. QuTech is expanding at an accelerated pace and the main goal of the team is to improve and grow our business at the same speed, by facilitating and developing impact oriented collaborations within the Quantum field. We do such in cooperation with the TU Delft Innovation & Impact Centre (I&IC), TNO Tech Transfer Office and the scientific colleagues at the Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science faculties.

Securing the QuTech intellectual property (IP) is the foundational cornerstone for our commercial activities. Protected IP is key to attract future investors, to capitalize research results and to provide spin-outs with solid assets. Identifying and registering inventions, and making sound agreements to make them applicable to the benefit of society, is essential in connecting science to business and create quantum impact.

Job description

As Quantum Technology Officer you will support, encourage and facilitate our scientists and engineers in the IP harvesting process. Identification of IP opportunities in accordance with QuTech business strategy is key. With our ambition to file 15-20 QuTech patents per year, we need someone able to pro-actively interact with our researchers and facilitate a quick transfer of their science to IP. In order to do so you need to be able to level with them as though you were their post-doc. This involves:

  • Reaching out to QuTech researchers and engineers to stimulate the submission of invention disclosures;
  • Assessing QuTech scientific and engineering solutions to identify potential industrially applicable inventions;
  • Supporting QuTech inventors in writing Invention Disclosure Forms (IDF), and translating scientific ideas into invention descriptions.
  • Participating, where appropriate, in the communication between QuTech inventors and external patent attorneys.
  • Getting to know QuTech projects by heart, engaging with stakeholders from various organizations and keeping abreast of trends and changes in the Quantum field.
  • Understanding that to smoothen the IP filing process, you will need to constantly update your knowledge of QuTech’s scientists work and field.
  • Having excellent insight in potential quantum growth areas and trends as they develop in order to identify potential IP opportunities.

If you are this person with a scientific heart and business acumen, that gets energy from facilitating our scientists in an ambitious supporting role, then we need you!

As a Quantum Technology Officer, you will support business development by assisting our scientists in creating a high-quality IP portfolio. As a trusted partner of our scientists, you should endeavour to be the first to know of every new discovery made, help them to report such IP as soon as possible and raise awareness to the importance of making such filings. You will do such together with a Quantum IP Administrator, that will support and train you in IP formalities and maintenance.

Your goal will be putting your scientific knowledge to work in identifying potential IP, unburden our scientists and engineers in reporting such IP and work together seamlessly with TU Delft and TNO in enabling a smooth transfer of such findings into entrepreneurial practice. All the while being in close contact with and learning from the world’s leading Quantum scientists.

You will formally report to the QuTech Director of Business Development and be part of Quantum innovation, embedded in our business development team and part of the QuTech international scientific and engineering community. You will perform your tasks under the guidance of an experienced Quantum IP Administrator and work in close contact with the TU Delft IP team and the TNO IP & Contracting team.

You are proactive, service-oriented and aware of your organizational surroundings. Above all, you can place your own actions in a larger context and are, despite the diverse positions of the many parties involved, able to effectively help inventions to the next phase, effortlessly switching between science and patenting and thus achieving IP harvesting results.

You are a suitable candidate when you have:

  • MSc or PhD in Quantum Physics / knowledge of Quantum Internet and Quantum computing, preferably at post-doc level;
  • Experience, in working within the field of Quantum Physics and preferably also in filing intellectual property on technological innovations;
  • Willingness to learn the various aspects of IP on the job, being coached by the Quantum IP Administrator and TU Delft/TNO IP professionals;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and business orientation, while at the same time daring to ask your business colleagues for help when in doubt about the right approach;
  • Enthusiasm: you like to think along with others, tell others about your work, to cooperate with scientists and raise awareness about IP;
  • Flexibility: you can ‘switch gears’ quickly and keep several balls rolling at once, because you can plan well and work in a structured way;
  • Ambition to take responsibility in a complex multi-stakeholder environment;
  • Good contact and communication skills, most importantly under time pressure;
  • The ability to speak and write in English with ease, and aspiration to learn Dutch.

Conditions of employment

  • A contract with TU Delft, a top international university combining education and research in science, engineering and design and known for its pioneering, for instance in the creation of the world-famous Dutch waterworks
  • Excellent opportunities for increasing your IP knowledge, extending your network and continuing your professional development beyond the academic realm
  • A salary of maximum €6.181,- gross per month (at 38 hours/1.0 fte)
  • 2-year contract with the prospect of permanent employment
  • Excellent pension scheme and a monthly work costs contribution
  • A year-end bonus, paid as a pro-rata bonus in December (13th month pay)
  • The possibility to partly compose your own employment conditions package
  • The opportunity to work flexible hours
  • An extensive leave scheme and partly paid parental leave
  • Sports with discount and participation in the TU Delft Health Coach Program.
