Principal investigator / Faculty position in experimental quantum optics
Join QuTech and be part of the quantum revolution!
At QuTech we are looking for a Principal Investigator to join our team.
The position is in experimental physics with a focus on the area of quantum optics for future applications in quantum communication and quantum networking.
The candidate’s research program is expected to contribute to the general aim of the Quantum Internet Division (QID) within QuTech. In the Quantum Internet Division, a full quantum network stack, novel applications for the quantum internet, and the enabling technology for the realization of large-scale quantum networks and modular quantum computers for quantum computation, simulation and sensing are being developed.
Candidates interested in teaching can participate the development of courses offered by the university both at the undergraduate and at the graduate level. This can happen in collaboration with the department of Quantum Nanoscience in the faculty of Applied Sciences.
The department of Quantum Nanoscience studies quantum phenomena in a wide variety of nanometer scale devices and materials, exploring new physics and novel applications of quantum effects. Areas include Quantum Matter, Quantum Sensing and Quantum Transduction.
QuTech together with the Departments of Bionanoscience and Quantum Nanoscience constitute the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft (KIND) established by the US-based Kavli foundation. The successful candidate will be part of this vibrant research community and can expect a competitive start-up package to enable a quick start of their research program.
QuTech is a mission-driven research institute run jointly by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Together, we work on a radically new technology with world-changing potential, developing scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and an intrinsically safe quantum internet.
We are creating the quantum future, and we believe that quantum technology will be a game changer in many social and economic sectors – including health, agriculture, climate and safety. To achieve our ambitious goals, we bring together scientists, engineers and industry in an inspiring environment, with plenty of space for ambition, entrepreneurship and innovation. QuTech’s research and engineering activities are conducted in three divisions: Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Qubit Research.
220 FTE and over 300 curious people work in our divisions and support teams, and we actively search and welcome many more new colleagues who share our vision and enthusiasm.
The ideal candidate for this PI position finds inspiration in collaborations with both experimentalists and quantum information theorists. Candidates should have a successful scientific track record and be able to formulate an independent research program addressing current scientific and technological challenges.
Conditions of employment
Junior candidates will be appointed on a tenure-track basis with the prospect of a tenured position following a successful evaluation after maximally 5 years. Senior candidates can be offered directly a tenure position.
Fixed-term contract: 6 years with evaluation for permanent employment after max 5 years.
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
TU Delft sets high standards for the English proficiency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English proficiency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.
TU Delft/QuTech offers a customizable compensation package, an attractive pension scheme, holiday allowance, generous holidays, 13th month pay (paid as a pro-rata bonus in December), a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and there is an international primary school.
Your contract will be with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), an organisation built on strong foundations. As creators of the world-famous Dutch waterworks, and pioneers in biotech, TU Delft is a top international university combining science, engineering and design. It delivers world class results in education, research and innovation.
For generations, our engineers have proven to be entrepreneurial problem-solvers in both business and social contexts. TU Delft offers 16 Bachelor’s and 32 Master’s programs to more than 23,000 students. Our scientific staff consists of 3,500 staff members and 2,800 PhD candidates. Together we imagine, invent and create solutions using technology to ensure positive change on a global scale: Challenge. Change. Impact!
Soft landing in the Netherlands
Starting out in a new country presents quite a challenge for international applicants. Therefore the Coming to Delft Service programme will provide you support ranging from informative events and finding accommodation to the Dual Career support for accompanying partners (wishing to continue their career in the Netherlands).
Moreover on TU Delft campus there is an international day care centre and an international primary school. The international secondary school is located close to campus. Coming to Delft services are not only available for international non-Dutch applicants, Dutch applicants returning to the Netherlands will be supported as well.
