Joachim worked for almost 15 years as a patent examiner at the European Patent Office in Rijswijk, followed by a traineeship at patent law firm and a position in the industry. Before joining QuTech in January 2023, Joachim operated an intellectual property consultancy business, in sole ownership.

He studied physics at the University of Freiburg and the University of Heidelberg. His studies were concluded with a PhD in QCD at the HERMES collaboration, DESY Hamburg.
