Salary scale: € 2588 to € 4757 gross per month with full-time appointment
QuTech is a growing research institute, established in 2014, in the area of quantum computing, a public-private collaboration between Delft University of Technology (the TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). In 2014, QuTech acquired the status of a national icon. The Netherlands occupies a unique position of expertise in the area of quantum computing. QuTech is its core, embedded in a broader ecosystem in the Netherlands and abroad. Within QuTech a path is being laid from pure academic research to a combination of scientific research and professional technology development. QuTech’s mission is the development of a quantum computer and quantum internet.
Within QuTech, a total of about 160 FTE scientists from TNO and the Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) and Applied Sciences work in an international, inspiring, and innovative setting with much room for ambition, entrepreneurship and innovation. QuTech is organised into so-called Roadmaps: Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing, Topological Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Computing, Shared Development, and the QuTech Academy. QuTech is led by a Scientific Director, together with the Management Team, consisting of the Roadmap Leaders and the Managing Director (MD). The MD is responsible for QuTech’s operations and manages the support staff, including the QuTech technicians and cryo engineers. The working language is primarily English.
Job description QuTech is seeking engineers who have experience with cryogenic equipment and in particular with dilution refrigerators. The engineer we seek is able to work together with researchers to continually refine the infrastructure within the cryogenic equipment in order to adapt it to the most recent developments in the area of quantum bits. In this position, you work within a professional team at the centre of scientific engineering. You are a link between the general technicians and the researchers, and you work on various research setups in our cryo labs. You are responsible for maintaining the cryogenic equipment and repairing broken components as needed. You will also be called upon to improve and/or design the infrastructure within the cryogenic setup according to the latest needs. In addition, you give instruction to students on the use of the equipment.
Requirements Ideally, you have completed a PhD degree in (Applied) Science. You are able to understand the complexity of the equipment and the researchers’ intent and to translate these into concrete results. You are also practical and, together with the general technicians, able to help and advise the researchers within QuTech. In addition to the background stated above, you have the following competencies: • You are good at organising and scheduling your own work, in synchronisation with the researchers. • You are persuasive, which enables you to work well with different types of colleagues (scientists, engineers, post-docs, PhD students). • You have good communication skills. • You are solution-oriented and creative in thinking of solutions. • You have general knowledge of cryogenic techniques below 4 Kelvin. • You are (completely) familiar with dilution refrigerators and can operate them independently. • You have general knowledge of pumps and vacuum techniques. You can, for example, replace the seal of a pump. • You have knowledge of the properties of materials at low temperatures, such as superconductors, thermal and electrical conductors, expansion coefficients, etc. • You have the skills to make and install the wiring and coax cables in the dilution refrigerators. • You are familiar with design programs such as Inventor or Pro/ENGINEER. • You can express yourself well in English. • Lastly, you are comfortable in a young, dynamic and ambitious workplace. • Experience working in a laboratory is an advantage.
Conditions of employment This is a full-time position for 38 hours per week (1,0 FTE). The position is offered for one year initially with the prospect of extension based on good performance. The salary for this position depends on knowledge and experience and is based on scale 10 or 11 (with a maximum of €4.757,- gross per month with a full-time appointment). The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers child care and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
